While you’re out buying all this stuff, you might as well buy the siphon and algae scrubber pad, too. There are hand siphons, which are pretty easy to use, and there are the siphons that hook up to a sink, which are really easy to use, but also cost quite a bit. Buy the algae scrubber that corresponds to the type of tank you have (glass or acrylic). There’s no such thing as a free lunch, so while the magnetic algae scrubbers may look appealing, they will never remove that bright green algae. That requires some patience and a lot of elbow grease. Stick to algae scrubber pads or pads with long handles and prepare to scrub once in a while.

With them breeding, there are a couple of ways for you to set up. The first is to have a talk with your seller and let them know that you want to have a pair that mates. A lot of discus breeders take this option because of how simply it can be done. Taking this option could cost you though as you will be expected to pay between 0 and 0 for a mating pair. The other option is buying a group of little discus fish with the hope that they’re not of the same gender. You could do this option while you’re setting up the tank.

Pick gravel or sand for the bottom; this is essential for a healthy fish tank (approximately. 2-3 inches). Cheap gravel and sand can be bought from home improvement stores. Sand is ideal for fish that like to dig but it must be stirred regularly to stop dead spots that will create havoc on your fish tank.

Learn about the aquarium nitrogen cycle. This cycle is extremely important for new hobbyists to understand if they want to keep their fish alive for any amount of time. Often times new hobbyists will go out and buy a tank and the fish at the same time. All is well for a couple of days but then their fish start to die. this is primarily due to ammonia poisoning in an un-cycled tank. Learn about the aquarium nitrogen cycle before you buy your first fish to prevent any unnecessary fish deaths and heartache.

Convicts, like all cichlids, can be quite aggressive when threatened. You’ll need to watch your tank to be sure your little guy isn’t attacking (and hurting) your larger fish. You also need to use care when performing tank maintenance. They may have small mouths but a frightened fish can nip. It’s not likely they’ll hurt you, but you might hurt your fish accidentally, trying to get away from him!

Now you can start to arrange your driftwood and larger stones into the layout you would like. Try to create anough space for swimming and plenty of hiding spaces and territories for your intended fish.

About the most challenging thing to deal with on a Whisper Aquarium Filters is changing the cartridges every three to four weeks! If you think you can put up with that inconvenience, you’ve a nice surprise coming. The filters are typically cartridges, designed to be disposable; it can be as easy as removing the old and installing the freshly rinsed new.

Assuming that you already have a tank, the first thing that you need to buy is the substrate material. The substrate is important because it allows you to plant vegetations in your aquarium. It also holds and traps some nutrients and friendly bacteria which are needed by the plants.
